FAQ

QUESTIONS WE’RE OFTEN ASKED

Here are some of the questions we’re often asked about choosing, installing and repairing doors.
If you can’t find the answer you need, just get in touch.

Composite doors are particularly popular for entrances because of their solid construction, security and wide choice of styles. uPVC is practical, low-maintenance and usually more budget-friendly, while aluminium offers slim profiles, strength and a contemporary finish. The best choice depends on where the door is going and what matters most to you.

The material alone doesn’t determine how secure a door is. The frame, locking system, hardware, glazing and quality of installation all play an important part. A well-specified and properly installed door is more important than simply choosing one material over another.

Bi-fold doors are a good option when creating the widest possible opening between your home and garden is the priority. Sliding doors usually provide larger uninterrupted areas of glass and don’t require the panels to fold to one side. The available space and the way you intend to use the opening will usually determine which works better.

Sometimes, but it depends on the condition, dimensions and compatibility of the existing frame. In many cases a new door is supplied with a matching frame to ensure the complete system fits, seals, locks and performs as intended. We can assess the existing installation before recommending the best approach.

A door can become difficult to operate for several reasons, including movement or adjustment of the hinges, worn hardware, changes in alignment or problems with the locking mechanism. It doesn’t automatically mean the whole door needs replacing – many of these issues can be repaired or adjusted.

Often, yes. Problems with locks, handles, hinges, alignment and seals can frequently be repaired without replacing the complete door. If the door or frame is badly damaged or no longer performing properly, we’ll explain whether replacement would make more sense in the long term.

Look beyond the final price. Compare the door specification, frame, glazing, locking system, hardware, installation, finishing work, guarantees and any certification included. Two doors that look very similar in photographs may not necessarily be equivalent products.

Most replacement doors can be installed with minimal disruption, but every opening is different. The condition of the existing frame, surrounding brickwork, internal finishes and flooring can all affect the work required. These areas should be assessed before installation so you know what to expect.
